The weekend before Christmas 2020, Houghton Lake froze over from shore to shore. In the past few years, this has not been the case, but the eager Ice Boat Racers weren't going to let some good ice pass them by.
Holding their 2020 Central Region Championship on December 19th and 20th, we had a front row seat to the action as the elegant sails glided across the frozen surface of the lake.
According to Wikepedia, these ice boats can reach speeds up to and above 60mph across the ice with favorable conditions. Can you imagine what that would be like?! It looks like a blast to me!
Being there was open water just the week prior, it's a pretty ballsy sport.
Besides a list of competitions to enter, Iceboat.org offers their members a slew of safety advice for both new and veteran sailors which not only reminds Michigan outdoor sports enthusiasts that NO ICE IS SAFE ICE, but that ice is hard if you crash on it!
From helmets to inflatable safety vests, a length of rope, ice picks and creepers, the ice boater needs to be prepared for the worst.
What do you think? Would you ever do it?
Composite Concepts has used boats running anywhere from $200.00 to $8,000.00, and like the sculling adventure, it might be worth a couple hundred to experience it. I wonder if it's too late to notify Santa?
Thanks for dropping by. Happy Christmas this week, and may all your dreams come true in 2021!
